Award Winning Artisan Gelato Maker Comes to Stamford
There’s the Super Bowl in the NFL, the World Series in MLB, The World Cup in soccer and in the world of gelato, there is the Gelato Festival World Masters.
The Gelato Festival World Masters takes place 2021 in Italy, and features the best artisan gelato makers in the world. It starts with the top 5,000 entrants worldwide and in the end, will see the top 36 standing on the stage. In the gelato world this is huge. And, Patterson, New Jersey native Mike Guerriero, 27, wants that title.
But, before Guerriero makes his way to Italy, he’ll first make a stop in Stamford, where he’ll showcase his acclaimed Gelato for attendees at the 3rd Annual Hey Stamford! Food Festival (August 24 & 25).
Just like any top performer, Guerriero started at the bottom and worked his way to the top of his game. He was just 14 years old when he was handed a broom and told that he’d be working at Gelotti, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor on a prominent Main Street storefront in Patterson, NJ. Not only was he scooping ice cream, but those first years saw him cleaning the parking lots and other odds and ends. His responsibilities soon grew and he eventually discovered his passion for gelato.
Guerriero now owns two shops in New Jersey, where they offer both traditional flavors and the more creative. His recipes are inspired by his upbringing as a kid and non-stop experimentation. Guerriero has been known to incorporate savory flavors, like tomato and garlic and olive oil, which as he explained to us capture the smells and senses of his grandmother’s garden.
As his passion for the business grew, so did his exposure in the gelato world. Guerriero soon found himself competing with some of the best in the business, while also making appearances on Food Network, CBS, and Bravo TV. The Gelato Festival World Ranking, a system that defines the best artisanal gelato artisans worldwide, currently ranks Guerriero as the #16 artisan gelato maker in the world.
Guerriero earned his spot in the Gelato Festival World Masters by taking home the top prize in the seven-city Gelato Festival this past October. The flavor that got him there was Blueberry Basil, which featured Jersey-grown blueberries.
You’ll have the chance to taste the award winning flavor along with 7-8 others on August 24 & 25 when Guerriero participates in the 3rd Annual Hey Stamford! Food Festival in Mill River Park.
And if you ever find yourself in New Jersey (and soon NYC) stop by one of his
