Van Leeuwen’s New CBD Oil-Infused Ice Cream Is Awesome
The family-owned Brooklyn-based ice cream maker beloved for its velvety scoops has introduced a new flavor that sounds like a stoner’s munchie dream come true.
Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream’s Couch Potato starts with a base that uses potato chips — what? — and then folds in even more salty accents: chocolate covered pretzels and roasted peanuts. Gooey caramel swirls hug mini marshmallows. And the star ingredient? CBD made from extra virgin coconut oil and hemp from Plant People. There’s approximately 5 milligrams in each scoop.
OK, just to be clear, this treat is NOT going to get you high. CBD doesn’t have the psychoactive power of THC that’s typically associated with marijuana. CBD is prized for its anti-inflammatory properties and is said to promote a sense of well being. Eat a big bowl of Couch Potato and you might feel compelled to mellow out, you know, on the couch. Binge-watching Breaking Bad completely optional.
So, how does Couch Potato taste? Is it as delicious as the Planet Earth? That’s another whimsical creation from the clever team that first rolled out their ice cream in bright yellow trucks in New York City back in 2008.
We sampled a dozen different flavors at the Silver Lake shop in Los Angeles, the newest location in the city that’s warmly embraced this East Coast brand. And that’s saying something considering all the spectacular artisan ice cream shops around the vast metropolis. (Jeni’s, McConnell’s, Scoops Westside, Mother Moo Creamery and Afters just to name a few.)
The Couch Potato was a definite standout, especially if you love the blissful marriage of sweet and salty. Add the crunch of peanuts and pretzels on top of that and we’re so high on this creation.
Oh, and if you didn’t know, it might come as a shock to learn Couch Potato is completely vegan. Like all Van Leeuwen’s vegan ice cream, the ultra-creamy texture and taste comes from cocoa butter and cashew milk made at the Brooklyn production facility.
Not in LA or NYC? Van Leeuwen’s ships its pints nationwide.
